My favourite Top 10 Holi songs…Chitrahaar way

FaceTweet it!

In good old Doordarshan days, little were the chances that you forget a popular festival. There was Chitrahar that would fill in for the neighbourhood pundit with popular songs from Bollywood (over the years hindi movies have ensured that not a single popular festival is songless). So if it was Holi that was due in a week, Chitrahaar would feature at least 2-3 holi songs. My post today aims to do a Chitrahaar again. I bring you my favourite 10 holi songs. With the festival of colors just two days away, I hope you would love this colourful collection of songs.

1) Rang Barse from Silsila

If there is one song that puts you in Holi mood, it is this song from the movie Silsila, featuring Amitabh Bacchan, Rekha, Jaya Bhaduri and Sanjeev Kumar. So the Number 1 spot.

2) Jogi Ji from Nadiya Ke Paar

This Sachin and Sadhana starrer was a musical hit all over India, later inspiring Rajshree films to do another musical hit with very much the same story “Hum Aapke Hain Kaun”. The Holi song from this movie is another big favorite of mine. I just love the lyrics. Also this shows the exact way Holi is celebrated back there in my native place…some kind of a nostalgia attached to it.

3) Holi ke Din from Sholay

Another Amitabh starrer, but has Dharmender dancing to impress Hema Malini. If you cannot forget the song, you also cannot forget Gabbar Singh (Amjad Khan) asking his cronies in his characteristic style “Holi…kab hai Holi”.

4) Aaj na chodenge from Kati Patang

Another favourite Holi song.

5) Aaj Brij Me Holi Re Rasiya

After Vasant Panchami, there is a tradition of singing Phaguas (another name for Holi festival). People would congregate at the local temple and amidst the Taal of Dholak and tablas, there is one song that gets sung more often. It is “Aaj Brij Me Holi Re Rasiya”. It recounts the Holi celebrations in Brij, the birthplace of Lord Krishna where he would come to celebrate the festival with his beloved Radha and the other Gopis.

6) Ang se ang lagana sajan from Darr

Juhi Chawla couldn’t have looked as sweet as in this song. The only contrast is Shahrukh Khan.

7) Holi Khele Raghuveera from Baghban

If someone can do a Holi song, it is Amitabh Bacchan for sure. Decades after he did Rang Barsey, he again did it with Holi Khele Raghuveera.

8) Saat Rang Me from Akhir Kyon

9) Mal De Gulaal from Kamchor

10) Are Ja Re Hat Natkhat from Navrang
